L’ensemble di musica medioevale e rinascimentale “Orientis Partibus” nasce ad Assisi agli inizi degli anni ‘90, dal fortunato incontro fra alcuni musicisti umbri già esecutori attivi ed apprezzati nel panorama musicale classico italiano. Mosso dal comune interesse per la cultura e la musica antica, il gruppo si impegna fin dall’inizio a ricreare l’atmosfera popolare e cortese del mondo medioevale.
Il nome dell’ensemble, che letteralmente significa “dalle parti d’oriente”, è ispirata ad un omonimo conductus natalizio ed allo stesso tempo richiama i versi del Paradiso dantesco che paragonano Assisi ad un nuovo oriente da cui è sorto Francesco, astro raggiante di santità.

ma Oriente, se proprio dir vuole”.

L’ensemble “Orientis Partibus” legge oggi il medioevo con spirito di appartenenza a luoghi e visioni sempre vive in Umbria, terra dei santi. La fedeltà interpretativa, giocata sapientemente sulle antiche architetture musicali, è espressa al meglio da una meticolosa ricerca timbrica, ottenuta anche con attente ricostruzioni degli strumenti musicali dell’epoca, spesso su base di precisi riferimenti iconografici. Il tutto è impreziosito delle esperienze dei singoli esecutori del gruppo che, sempre nell’ambito della musica medioevale, hanno al loro attivo tournée in Italia, Francia, Germania, Polonia, Olanda, Austria, Finlandia, Ungheria, Australia.
L’ensemble si esibisce da anni con successo per importanti associazioni concertistiche e partecipa alle maggiori rassegne europee di musica antica: il “Canto delle Pietre” (Lombardia, 1996, 2001); il “Festival internazionale per la pace” (Assisi, 1998); Festival di POTSDAM (Germania 2001); La Semaine Médiévale de Fribourg (Svizzera 2001);

The medieval & renaissance musical ensemble Orientis Partibus was formed by a group of highly acclaimed Umbrian musicians in the town of Assisi at the beginning of the 1990s. Its passion for medieval culture and music led the group to pursue the recreation of the courtly folk traditions of that medieval world.
The name of the ensemble, which literally translated means “from oriental parts”, was taken from a 12th-century Christmas conductus, and is also a reference to those verses of Dante’s Paradise which likened Assisi to a new Orient from which St. Francis, a shining star of sanctity, emerged:

“Let him who names the place not rest content,
then, with Ascesi – that’s too weak a word:
Who’d speak aright should say the Orient”.
(Dante Alighieri, Paradiso XI, vv. 54-54)

The “Orientis Partibus” Ensemble provides a vision of the Middle Ages based on places and experiences that are still very much alive to this day in the region of saints represented by Umbria. Thee faithfulness of their interpretation, cleverly construed upon ancient musical arrangements, is accurately expressed by a meticulous pursuit of the right timbre made possible by the careful reconstruction of the musical instruments of that age, often on the basis of precise iconographic information. This solid instrumental base is furthered by the considerable experience of the individual musicians who make up the ensemble: the ensemble has played medieval music concerts on tour in Italy, France, Germany, Poland, Holland, Austria, Finland, Hungary and Australia.
The Ensemble has been successfully performing for a number of years for well-known concert associations and at the major European ancient music festivals, including:
the ‘Canto delle Pietre’ Festival (Lombardy - Italy 1996 & 2001); the ‘International Festival for Peace’ (Assisi - Italy 1998); the Potsdam Festival (Germany 2001); the Fribourg Medieval Week (Switzerland 2001); the ‘UmbriaBudapest’ festival organised jointly by the Italian Cultural Institute in Budapest and the ‘Sagra Musicale Umbra’ (Hungary 2002); ‘Festival Quodlibet’ (Arezzo – Italy 2002, 2004 & 2005); the ‘Alia Musica’ Festival (Parma 2002, 2003, 2005 & 2006); St. Cecilia Music Society (Grand Rapids – Michigan USA 2005); the ‘Conques Festival’ (France 2005); the ‘Rassegna di musica antica: Itinerari musicali sacri e profani’ (Aosta - Italy 2005); the ‘Castel Tirolo Evenings’ (Merano - Italy 2006); the ‘Courtly Music Festival’ (Friuli Venezia Giulia – Italy 2006); and the ‘Cantar di Pietre’ Festival (Lugano – Switzerland 2006 & 2008).
